What Does “Employment At Will” Mean?

Employment at will means that, in general, a Washington employer can terminate an employee at any time, with or without cause. However, there are exceptions to this rule.

A Washington employer may not terminate an employee based on his or her religion, race, sex, disability, age (if over 40), or certain other protected categories. Also, an employer cannot terminate an employee “at will” if there is an employment agreement, Collective Bargaining Agreement, or other contract that provides otherwise.
